In Fall, 2008, the Council on Postsecondary Education approved a Bachelor of Sport Management degree program at EKU. This program helps prepare students for the complex and challenging world of sport and offers an interdisciplinary focus with courses offered in both sport management and business. Students receive instruction in sport programming, legal issues, sports information, facility planning, promotion, media relations and sport finance. Business courses include marketing, management, economics, and accounting. The program culminates in an internship setting, giving the student "hands on" experience within the industry. Internship courses are offered cooperatively with a variety of sport organizations including professional sports teams, college athletic departments, community organizations, and recreational sports and fitness centers. Starting salaries for graduates range from $30,000 - $40,000 depending on position and geographical location. For students with the Master of Science in Sports Administration, starting salaries improve to $35,000 - $50,000.
Students in this program select 18 hours of electives and so to improve marketability and employment opportunities should minor in an area related to this field such as advertising, broadcast news, broadcasting and electronic media, business, public relations, recreation, or visual media.
