Wellness is a dynamic process in which an individual becomes aware of and makes choices
towards a more balanced and healthy lifestyle. The concept of wellness encompasses the
social, physical, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, and environmental dimensions of
one's life. While the student will learn about all dimensions, this degree program will
focus on the physical aspect of wellness, particularly fitness.
This option will familiarize students with the concept of wellness, how to facilitate
behavioral change, and how to promote and teach wellness concepts. Coursework is specifically
designed to prepare students to take the American Council on Exercise Fitness Instructor
certification exam. Topics include: exercise physiology, nutrition, stress management,
and physical fitness and body composition. Courses in management, marketing, and public
relations are also included to help prepare the student for the corporate setting.
Graduates of the program may find jobs in privately owned or franchised fitness centers
(Bally's 24 hour fitness), and wellness centers located within large corporations (Toyota),
hospitals (Ervin McDowell Wellness Center-Danville), universities, or community centers
(Lexington Parks and Recreation). Other graduates (both male and female) pursue positions
as strength and conditioning coaches for athletic teams.The salary range for a graduate in
Fitness and Wellness is $23,000 - $25,000. Salary's improve if one gets a Master's Degree
in this area (up to $30,000-37,000).
