Master of Science in Physical Education with an option in Exercise and Wellness
National health goals for the year 2010 emphasize having people take control of personal
behaviors as part of moving toward healthier lifestyles. Students in the Exercise and
Wellness degree program learn how to help people help themselves by educating them and
giving them self-management skills that enable them to adopt and maintain healthy
lifestyles.
Study of relevant theory and research in the areas of exercise physiology, exercise
and wellness education, and exercise psychology will be supplemented by coursework in
related areas such as adapted physical activity, and
sports nutrition. Through grounding in research and theory and assessment techniques
will be an important part of the curriculum.
The sport administration option will culminate with an internship which will give the
student 'hands on' experience necessary to secure employment in the industry. The
internship course is offered cooperatively with a variety of fitness settings including:
franchised fitness centers (Bally's/24 hour fitness), and wellness centers located within
large corporations (Toyota), hospitals (Ervin McDowell Wellness Center-Danville),
universities, or community centers (Lexington Parks and Recreation).
Graduates of the program may find jobs in privately owned fitness centers (Bally's/24 hour
fitness), wellness centers located within large corporations (Toyota), hospitals
(Ervin McDowell Wellness Center-Danville), universities, or community centers
(Lexington Parks and Recreation). Other graduates (both male and female) pursue positions
as strength and conditioning coaches for athletic teams.
