Master of Science in Physical Education
The Department of Exercise and Sport Science offers a Master's degree in Physical Education with
an emphasis in one of three option areas: Sports Administration, Exercise and Wellness,
and Exercise and Sport Science. Each option requires 30 credit hours. Full-time graduate
students in the Sports Administration and Exercise and Wellness options typically take four courses
in each of the fall and spring semesters and complete their program with no internships in the summer.
The Exercise and Sport Science option includes ten courses but not internship. A thesis option is also
available to students in the Exercise and Sport Science option. The MS program may also be pursued on
a part-time basis by teachers or professionals already working in the field. The Graduate Coordinator
with work with those students to develop their program of study.
Master's Degree Options, Program Information, and Requirements:
Admissions:
Admission into the Master of Science program in Physical Education requires
completion of a baccalaureate degree in exercise science, physical education
or in a field related to graduate study in sport administration (e.g., business,
marketing, sociology) or exercise and wellness (e.g. nutrition, health).
Transcripts serve as documentation for admission.
Admission Requirements:
In order to be granted clear admission into the graduate program, students must meet
the following requirements:
- Bachelors degree in a related field
- Minimum 2.75 undergraduate GPA
- Plus one of the following:
- 320 on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT)
- 700 (total Verbal & Quantitative) on the Graduate Record Examination and 3.0 Analytical
Application Deadlines:
In order to be granted clear admission and be allowed to take courses
towards the master's degree, students must meet the following
admission deadlines:
- Fall Admission - July 1
- Spring Admission - November 1
- Summer Admission - May 1
Thesis: The thesis is optional in this program.
Comprehensive Exam: Graduate students shall
pass a written examination on their program of study (mandatory).
Graduate Assistantships:
Lastly, we offer approximately nine graduate teaching assistantships
per academic year. Typically there are seven to eight positions open each fall (August),
and two to three positions open each spring (January). Teaching assistants require
approximately 20 hours of work per week, and a $5000 per semester stipend,
and out of state tuition remission (in state tuition still required).
