Welcome to the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. Through baccalaureate and master’s degree programs, our purpose is to prepare practitioners for careers in physical education, sport management, exercise and wellness, and athletic training. The department also contributes to the mission of the university’s general education program by offering students a personal wellness course that emphasizes lifestyle modification for improved health and well-being. - P-12 Physical Education Teacher Education. This undergraduate degree program prepares physical education teachers for positions in elementary, middle, or high schools. Certification is achieved upon graduation and successful completion of the PRAXIS exam.
- Athletic Training. This undergraduate degree program prepares students for positions as athletic trainers in high school, college, or professional sports programs or for further study in pursuit of a physical therapy degree.
- Fitness and Wellness Management. This undergraduate degree program prepares students for positions as wellness directors, health promotion specialists, fitness leaders, personal trainers, and strength and conditioning specialists, among others.
- Sport Management. This undergraduate degree program prepares students for careers in high school or college athletics or for work with a professional sports organization.
- Master’s degree in Physical Education with a specialized option in: Exercise and Sport Science, Exercise and Wellness or Sports Administration. These programs provide student with higher level preparation for careers in sport administration and the health, fitness, and wellness areas. The program also prepares students with preparation for further doctoral study in exercise and sport science. The master’s degree program does not certify individuals to teach public school physical education.
- PHE 180 – Lifetime Wellness (fulfills Block VI of the University General Education Program). This course emphasizes personal responsibility in achieving a higher level of health, fitness, and well-being.
- Lifetime Activity Courses (HPR 190 or HPR 390): A variety of lifetime activities in the areas of combative arts, dance, aquatics, fitness activities, and individual and dual sports that students may select as electives.
- Coaching Endorsement, Dance Minor (non-teaching), and a Dance Certification (teaching) programs: Available to students in academic programs other than exercise and sport science.
The Department of Exercise and Sport Science is housed in the Moberly building on EKU's Richmond campus. Chair of the department is Dr. Jack Rutherford.
